Rationale: The AUSD Team has been testing and researching security camera systems in order to meet security priorities. These priorities include: who is on campus/facial recognition, forensics to help with site issues/vandalism, a deterrent to crime, preventative (alerts/motion detection), coverage of high-risk areas, increased coverage, 1080p or higher quality per camera, easy to manage for principals, security, and technology staff. As the District continues to upgrade their perimeter fences and exterior door locks, the front office for all sites will become the primary entry point for guests. The District will install Verkada’s cloud-based video intercom solution to provide visibility and control to bring the buzz-to-enter concept. The video intercom solution will integrate with the cameras and the access controls system. This addition will create a single pane of glass where we can remotely take calls, gain visual context, view incoming visitors, and control access. The Verkada Intercom will provide an additional layer of protection and security, permitting site administrators and office staff the ability to lock the front door immediately and control who enters. Some of the key advantages of the intercom system are: • Identify guests through video images and allow two-way communication. • Remotely lock and unlock doors through a mobile app or web browser. • Take intercom calls away from the desk. The surveillance project was broken into phases: • Phase one - perimeter coverage • Phase two - access control • Phase three - blind spot coverage This contract is part of the phase three of our surveillance project, blind spot coverage. Blind spot coverage will include surveillance of exterior walkways between buildings, multi-purpose rooms, and entry points in front offices. The hardware, software, and 10-year licensing on the cameras will cost $79,538. This includes $33,038 in savings extended from Verkada and aggressively discounted pricing from the partner company Safe and Sound, which will broker the purchase. There will also be expected savings in technology staff time for maintaining the camera servers as well as the costs associated with replacing the camera servers.
Budgetary Impact: The cost, not to exceed $79,538, to be paid from Capital Facilities and Improvement Fund.
Recommendation: It is recommended the Board of Education approve contract between AUSD and Safe and Sound Security.
