Agreement between AUSD and Copia.pdf
Rationale: The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has formed a partnership with the non-profit organization Copia to enhance food access for low-income communities and reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with food waste. Copia addresses food insecurity in local neighborhoods by collaborating with schools to redistribute surplus food, thereby diminishing waste. Through this partnership, AUSD is in compliance with Senate Bill 1383, which requires food donors to donate as much edible food as possible that would otherwise go to waste. To date, AUSD has donated 1,086 meals and 1,303 pounds of edible food, diverted 4,010 pounds of carbon emissions, and saved approximately 297,100 gallons of water. AUSD has been working with Copia since May 2023.
